Camino de Santiago Wed 13th May: Day 1 - the start

St Jean Pied de Port - Zabildilka
59.4km, total time on the way 8:45hrs

Simply wonderful day crossing the Pyrenees to Roncevalles, then lovely trail, surrounded by birdsong, to Zubiri. Had a smile on my face all the way.

Pressed on to Zabidilka and stayed at a lovely albergue run by nuns of the order of the sacred heart. Tour of church during which we were able to ring the ancient bell followed by mass in which I was asked to read the lesson (in English!!). Lovely and plentiful communal dinner, followed by prayer, in which we were asked to voice our motivation and feelings on the Camino, and a pilgrim blessing.

Probably the most intense spiritual experience of my life and so, so special.

Phrase of the day:
"Buen Camino"

Comment of the day:
"You're running? You started from SJPP…today?? That's intense!"
